How to Stop Waiting for January & Start Changing Your Life Now

There are twelve weeks left in the year.

Twelve.

And if you’re anything like me, you probably have a running list of things you told yourself you would do “by the end of the year.”

The thing you were going to start.

The habit you were going to build.

The boundary you were going to set.

The project you were going to finally finish.

The version of your life you kept telling yourself you would get serious about.

Then somehow, here we are.

October.

And this is usually the point in the year when people start mentally checking out.

I’ll just wait until January.

The holidays are coming anyway.

I’ll start fresh next year.

But what if you didn't?

What if these final twelve weeks weren't the closing credits on another year you feel like you didn't quite get around to living?

What if they were an opportunity to prove to yourself that you don't need a new year to make a new decision?

That's what The Great Lock-In is about.

You Don't Need a New Beginning

I have never been particularly interested in the idea that January 1st possesses some magical power that October 7th doesn't.

Sure, the calendar changes.

But you don't automatically change with it.

And honestly, sometimes waiting for the “right” beginning becomes a very convenient way to avoid beginning at all.

I know this because I've done it too.

There have been plenty of moments when I've told myself that I'll get serious when things calm down, when I have more time, when I have more clarity, when the timing is better.

But eventually, you realize something:

You can keep waiting for your life to feel perfectly set up, or you can decide that your life is worth showing up for right now.

That doesn't mean you need to overhaul everything.

It doesn't mean you need six new goals, a color-coded planner, a 5 a.m. wake-up time, and a personality transplant before Thanksgiving.

Please, don't piss me off. 😂

Sometimes the most powerful thing you can do is identify what matters most and stop giving your energy to everything that doesn't.

So, What Are You
Actually Locking In On?

This is where I want you to get honest with yourself.

Not aspirational.

Not performative.

Honest.

If you had the next twelve weeks to make meaningful progress in one area of your life, what would you choose?

Your health?

Your money?

Your career?

Your relationships?

Your peace?

Maybe it's something completely different.

The point isn't to pick the thing that sounds the most impressive.

Pick the thing that would make you look back on these twelve weeks and say:

“I'm proud of myself for finally doing that.”

Keep in mind there is a difference between being busy and being intentional.

You can spend twelve weeks doing a whole lot and still avoid the one thing you know you need to address.

The Great Lock-In asks you to stop doing that.

Take Yourself Seriously

One of the biggest shifts I've made in my own life is learning that taking myself seriously doesn't mean becoming rigid.

It means believing my own words.

If I say something matters to me, my choices should eventually reflect that.

If I say I want a different life, I have to be willing to make different decisions.

If I say I want more peace, I have to stop volunteering for chaos.

If I say I want to grow something, I have to give it consistent attention.

If I say I want to become someone I'm proud of, I have to start acting like her before I feel completely ready.

That's self-trust.

And self-trust is built through evidence.

Every time you keep a promise to yourself, you give yourself another reason to believe you.

That matters far more than making another giant list of things you're going to "accomplish."

Your Life Doesn't
Need More Noise

There is so much pressure to constantly optimize ourselves.

More goals.

More routines.

More side hustles.

More hobbies.

More content.

More productivity.

But what if your next level doesn't require more?

What if it requires less distraction?

Less comparison.

Less explaining.

Less waiting for permission.

Less energy spent trying to keep up with somebody else's timeline.

Less abandoning what matters to you because something else suddenly looks more exciting.

You don't need five new hobbies.

You don't need to become a completely different person by January.

You need to get honest about what you want and decide that it's worthy of your attention.

That is a very different kind of discipline.

The Last Twelve
Weeks Can Still Count

Maybe this year hasn't gone the way you expected.

Maybe you experienced a disappointment you didn't see coming.

Maybe something you wanted didn't work out.

Maybe you've changed your mind about what you want.

Maybe you've outgrown something you once thought you needed.

Maybe you've spent more time surviving than building.

That doesn't mean the year is wasted.

And it certainly doesn't mean you have to wait until January to begin again.

You are allowed to change direction in October.

You are allowed to make a decision in November that changes the trajectory of your next year.

You are allowed to decide in December that the person you've been waiting to become is actually someone you can start becoming today.

There is still time.

Not necessarily to accomplish everything.

But to do something that matters.

And sometimes that one decision creates the momentum you've been waiting for.

So Here's Your
Lock-In Question

Forget the giant vision board for a second.

Forget what everybody else is doing.

Forget what you think you should be accomplishing before the year ends.

Ask yourself:

What have I been waiting for permission, motivation, or a new beginning to start doing?

Sit with that.

Then ask yourself:

What would change if I stopped waiting?

That's where your Great Lock-In begins.

Not with a perfect plan.

Not with a Monday.

Not with January 1st.

With a decision.

The next twelve weeks are going to pass whether you use them intentionally or not.

So you might as well make them count.

Choose the thing that matters.

Give it your attention.

Keep the promises you make to yourself.

And let these final weeks of the year become proof that you don't need a new calendar to create a different life.

You just need to decide you're ready to participate in creating it.
